Concept 1 – Santiago Calatrava:
Dramatic
use of curves that evoke the sense of movement through the building form.
Sustainability with addressing the theme of multicultural students
and staff who study or work at UNSW.
The combination of the five rectangular prisms that have been sequenced together helped to create a
light rail stop, that will further incorporate dramatic use of curves which helps
to evoke a sense of movement to this environment. The idea behind my chosen
concept is that architecture should not always become a simple form, but rather
engage with the individual and evoke a sense of emotional making you feel as
though you are in a new place. My chosen theme sustainability along with guidance of the individuals at UNSW has been incorporated throughout the model in various concepts. The rectangular shapes were changed and reconstructed into curves and other organic shapes that help to evoke the sense of movement in the light rail stop. This also help to create my second concept of an alternative world.
Uses the
environment to create an alternative existence, one that becomes seamless with
its environment, with also appreciating the human individual in the design.
Second concept to help situate the light rail
stop within its urban context.
Further I
wanted to create a new environment one different from the usual look of current
urban context. This concept allowed me to expand on the idea of creating an alternative rail stop that benefited the multicultural students and staff who go
to UNSW. As this rail stop is situated in a busy environment full of traffic,
the sanctuary offers an alternative existence that makes one feel as though they
were not in that chaotic environment. This also benefits each individual by
bringing people together to meet and relax. A large bridge becomes the main walkway for people to cross over to each side. The top balcony offers a relaxed seating area and cafe, whilst the bottom is for people waiting for the tram. I designed a set of square seating areas that elevates on a multiple levels, this becomes a meeting and waiting place for the trams. This area helps to situate the light rail stop within its urban context through, with the use of natural light, open areas, unusual curved sculptures and greenery which creates the second concept of an alternative environment and paradise for the individual.
SUSTAINABILITY:
I have chosen to incorporate the theme of sustainability into my light rail stop. A series of Solar panels are included into the ceiling of the glass shade roof that accumulate the suns energy, and allowing it to be reused and recycled elsewhere in the stop, including energy needed to run the trams, lights and cafes. Further, the wind produced from the trams is also taken in to produce electricity. By incorporating the 'green' aspect of sustainability as well, i have added various amounts of greenery, trees, grass and other vegetation to support the growth of nature in this 'alternative environment' made for the multicultural people that attend UNSW. Also I incorporated recycled timber for parts of the furniture and seating spaces.
SOLAR PANELS:
The image on the left: On the above white roofing i have incorporated a few solar panels to show my theme of sustainability. These Solar panels draws on the sun's energy to reuse that energy into running the light rail stop. The energy is further used for the electricity for the lights and trams. This helps to keep the light rail stop within the sustainable concept.
NATURAL LIGHTING:

NATURAL LIGHTING:
In the captured image on the left you can see the large glass shade that is situated in the middle of my model. The tinted glass provides protection from the sun but also allows natural light through the transparent material. By having this as glass it allows the area to not only feel more open but also helps to create my second theme of an alternative environment, as this is quite unique. The light rail stop allows for various amounts of light to access through all sides of the building form. This means that there are few lights used in the station, and therefore less electricity used.
GREENERY:
GREENERY:
By planting a large variety of trees and foliage, which also allows for a renewable and green environment. The greenery helps to set my light rail stop and the second concept which is the alternative place made for the individual people that attend UNSW. The trees help to situate the light rail stop within its urban context.
RECYCLED TIMBER:
All the large areas of seating are created from recycled timber. This is part of my 'sustainable theme', by using recycled materials as part of my light rail stop this is preventing the construction and further the energy that would be used into creating new materials. Also this would save from more trees being chopped down.
